Industrial Development Organization 

Overview of the Industrial Development Organization (IDO)

The Industrial Development Organization (IDO),  was conceived in 1987 by a dedicated team of youth in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, during a time of escalating conflict. This initiative aimed to assist needy communities in remote villages seeking income generation opportunities. The socio-economic challenges faced by these communities necessitated innovative solutions, particularly as many individuals were unable to venture out for work due to the ongoing conflict.

Background and Development

In the Eastern Province, isolated communities were striving to establish small-scale cottage industries to support their daily needs. However, they lacked access to essential industrial technologies and training. Recognizing this gap, two young visionaries, Sakthivell and Sakthieswary, took the initiative to empower these communities by learning and imparting new skills. Sakthivell, leveraging his networks in Colombo and Kurunegala, facilitated the acquisition of necessary technologies and provided voluntary training to uplift livelihoods.

 As a result of these efforts, numerous micro-level enterprises emerged, laying the groundwork for what would become the IDO in Batticaloa. The organization's mission was to foster self-sufficiency among local populations by equipping them with practical skills and knowledge.

 

Impact During Conflict

The situation intensified in 1990 with the eruption of further conflict in Sri Lanka. During this tumultuous period, IDO played a crucial role in supporting fishing and agricultural communities. The organization introduced innovative techniques for food preservation, including:

 - Dehydration of vegetables

- Drying and processing techniques for fish

- Food processing methods, such as jam and pulp making from fruits

 

These initiatives not only helped small-scale fishermen and farmers preserve their products but also contributed significantly to food security and livelihood development within these vulnerable communities.

 The Industrial Development Organization (IDO) evolved significantly between 1990 and 1999, reflecting the pressing needs of local communities in Eastern Sri Lanka. Recognizing the importance of a virtual organization, a new team was formed to enhance business and technology transfer techniques for those in need. During this period, IDO implemented a nominal fee structure to cover costs for raw materials and equipment rentals, facilitating training for micro and small-scale entrepreneurs.

 To minimize operational costs, the founders opted against establishing a formal office. Instead, they conducted their activities from home, delivering technology transfer and management training directly to communities as required. This approach ensured that potential entrepreneurs were not burdened by additional expenses.

 In response to growing demand and legal requirements, IDO was officially registered between 1999 and 2000 in Batticaloa. As it served entrepreneurs, IDO gained recognition from the Department of Industries in the North and East Provincial Councils (DOI NEP), which led to various training programs sponsored by them. This recognition enabled IDO to partner with leading national organizations such as CEFENET and Techno Action, allowing it to offer high-quality management and technology transfer programs not only in the Eastern Province but also in the Northern Province.

 Notably, IDO operated in areas controlled by the LTTE in the North, assisting many individuals in establishing small-scale industries. Its successful initiatives attracted support from USAID's OTI program, which funded peace-building workshops in Trincomalee that included income generation activities. This collaboration significantly boosted IDO's capabilities, equipping it with essential training equipment and resources to further its mission of empowering local communities through skill development and entrepreneurship.

Since 2000, the Industrial Development Organization (IDO) has expanded its mission beyond training entrepreneurs to include the development of trainers, facilitators, coaches, and technology transfer specialists across Sri Lanka. This strategic shift has resulted in the creation of a network of professionals, including leading machine manufacturers for small and cottage industries, marketers, consultants supporting persons with disabilities, and rural-level business coaches.

 IDO is proud to continue its services by directly supporting both entrepreneurs and consultants, serving as a vital provider of business development services. The organization remains committed to empowering individuals and communities by fostering entrepreneurship and enhancing skills that contribute to sustainable economic growth.
